The anonymous street artist/activist has received much acclaim for his ‘anti-system’ graffiti art, and more recently his ‘self-destructing’ artwork that caused an uproar in the fine art auction world.
Banksy’s modus operandi included graffiti ‘bombing’, using stencils to shape his artworks to cut his time on the scene and allowed him to effectively carry on as a vandal without getting caught by authorities.
His artwork has been mostly political – his first famous piece being ‘The Mild Mild West’ which was an image of a Teddy Bear throwing a Molotov at a group of policemen during the 1992 Bristol Riots.
We however mostly appreciate the irony that his anti-capitalism artworks end up being sold for large sums of money by the very audiences he satirises.
