The Porsche 928 is a luxury grand tourer produced by Porsche AG that debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. One of Porsche’s most ambitious design projects, it was originally intended to replace the company’s iconic 911 as it combined the power, poise, and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort, and equipment of a luxury saloon. Although it won early acclaim for its comfort and power, sales were slow as base prices were much higher than that of the previous range-topping 911 model and the 928’s front-engined, water-cooled design alienated many Porsche purists. Whilst it did not displace the 911 as initially anticipated, the 928 serves as a unique example of future-focused design that is seeing a well-deserved resurgence in collector appeal.
