Work has finally begun on the millennia clock first conceptualised by Danny Hillis in 1995 and now bankrolled by none other than Jeff Bezos.
The clock is intended to make us think about the long-term as opposed to the myopic hustle of the 24 hour day. The team has spent the past few years designing and shaping the parts needed for this never-done-before feat. Danny wanted to build a Clock that ticks once a year, where the century hand advances once every 100 years, and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium.
When first visiting the clock the time displayed will be from the previous visitor. This is done to save energy and not move the dials unless powered by the visitor. The clock uses thermal energy to keep the time correctly and will therefore always be accurate once wound.
There are 5-anniversary chambers that are being created of which only the 1 year and 10-year anniversary chambers will be completed by the team running the project. In a somewhat strange connection to our future ancestors, we are going to leave the 100, 1000, and 10 000 year anniversary chambers to the caretakers at the time.
If you wish to leave your mark for the future generations you can send your idea for the 10-year chamber to the team and they will take it into consideration with the other ideas that are submitted.
