In the early 1970’s a number of South African and Australian surfers headed to Hawaii to compete in the Hawaii Masters. Armed with talent and confidence in equal measure, these gutsy mavericks revolutionized the sport of surfing (as told in the 2008 documentary ‘Bustin’ Down the Door’). Big wave surfing demanded faster speeds and deeper barrel-rides – which lead South African Spider Murphy to design and shape Shaun Tomson’s ‘Pipeline Gun. Called the ‘Pink Banana’ due to its colour, length and formidable rocker, this 7’10” monolith led Shaun to win the 1975 Hawaii Masters and reshaped the future of surfing across the globe.
