Florence Knoll (1917 – 2019) was an American architect and furniture designer credited with creating the modernist look of America’s postwar corporate office using sleek furniture, artistic textiles and an uncluttered, free-flowing workplace environment.
Her “total design” favoured open work spaces over private offices, and integrated lighting, vibrant colours, acoustic fabrics, chairs and sofas grouped for informal discussions.
The company she formed with her husband, Knoll Associates, grew to become the leading innovator of modern interiors and furnishings in the 1950s and 1960s and form the foundation of the open-plan office designs that continue to shape the workspaces we find ourselves in today.
